Leather and Hide

Leather and hide

Thanks to the introduction of the laser, the engraving and cutting of leather and hide have become two extremely fast, precise and convenient processes. The laser perfectly cuts leather and hide as if they were a sheet of paper.

The effect of a laser engraving is that of a burn or fire marking and faithfully recreates the engravings made with traditional marking tools. It is indelible and permanent. Offering an extremely high level of precision, the laser can engrave writing, images and logos.

An innumerable amount of objects in leather and hide can be worked with the laser ranging from the field of clothing to that of furniture.

Two of the most frequent laser processes on leather and hide are undoubtedly the engraving and microperforation of leather soles and the marking of labels for applications on jeans and T-shirts.

The versatility of the laser instrumentation allows us to continuously vary the print register without having to bear the costs of changing moulds. Indeed, it is even possible to inscribe different numbers or texts on each treated piece and deliver even small batches of product to the customer. This immense convenience makes laser engraving and cutting particularly convenient when only a few pieces are to be made.

We have three lasers that allow us to work in parallel or with 3 totally different designs on a surface that reaches 500 mm x 1500 mm.

Fabrics and Textiles

Fabrics and Textiles

When a perfect cut or incision is required, even on particularly “difficult” fabrics, the laser represents the ideal solution. The cut is clean and, thanks to the heat produced, the profiles do not fray and no fringed edges are created.

We can cut and engrave any type of fabric: from filtering fabric to non-woven fabric (TNT), from linen to insulating materials, from cotton to jersey.

Thanks to the specificity of our equipment, we can perforate and micro-perforate any type of fabric without leaving any residue of material (fibres or yarns) on the side opposite to that of the incision. Indeed, during laser processing, the fabric is subjected to high temperatures which completely eliminate any trace of superfluous material.

The laser allows for non-contact and tool-free processing, making it a very useful solution in the case of fabrics and textiles with particularly delicate colours and textures and which would risk being damaged in contact with irons, tools…

We can engrave and cut even small batches in a short time at a very affordable cost. Compared to traditional marking and engraving systems, the laser adapts easily and quickly to the support and design, providing unparalleled economy and speed of mechanical execution.

Paper and Cardboard

Paper and Cardboard

Via precise modulation of the light beam, the laser can recreate fantastic designs on paper and cardboard and at the same time trace any image you desire, simply by changing the cutting lines as required.
In case of cutting and punching, the laser can puncture paper and cardboard without residue on either side; the hole is perfectly clean and no further work is required to remove small paper residues. The dimensions of the hole can reach even infinitely small diameters.

Processing

Creative processing

In the last few decades, technology has made great strides. The introduction of new techniques and instruments, such as laser equipment, has revolutionised many processes, not least marking, engraving and cutting.

The word “Laser” is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation – five letters to define a beam of photons which, properly channelled, can cut, engrave and mark any material.

Given the enormous potential for application in different sectors, research has developed different types of lasers depending on the uses for which they are intended. For example, the copper vapour laser (metal vapour laser) is used in dermatology, while the helium-neon laser is best known for its use in scanning barcodes.

The CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser is our laser of choice – one of the most efficient and powerful continuous wave lasers.

Unlike most machines in use, rather than moving the source on two racks, ours direct the beam onto the work surface through an optic of lenses and mirrors, permitting great gains in working speeds.

Processing and Measurements

Each laser is capable of working on a surface measuring 550 mm X 550 mm and can operate independently or in tandem with others.

Sel.Mat also performs work on surface areas of up to 1200 mm X 850 mm by means of a Cartesian Laser Plotter.

Compared with previous traditional techniques of engraving, cutting and marking, via laser the design and associated cuts can be perfectly reproduced, eliminating any problems to do with punches, pantographs, irregularities in the support… Indeed, the processing takes place without contact and leaves an indelible mark, which does not fade when exposed to light.

Last but not least, the laser allows you to program different designs, letterings and cuts at any time in advance or during operation. This significant flexibility makes processing very fast and means even small batches can be worked at low costs.

For laser cutting we recommend vector files: .dwg, .dxf, .ai, .eps.
Laser engravings can be realised from vector graphics or images in .jpeg, .tiff, .pdf, .bmp, etc. format.
For laser engraving and cutting on the same drawing, a file containing the two processes (engraving and cutting) differentiated by colour must be provided.

The cutting lines must be continuous, joined, and expressed in millimetres (mm); the file must be provided in full scale.
Always remove invisible lines or isolated points as the laser may interpret them as elements to be cut.
Always check the cutting lines of the image and pay attention to overlapping lines as they could compromise the final result.
